OpenAI said on October 15 that it is updating the voice features in ChatGPT, Codex, and dots with GPT-Live-1.1. The changes are practical rather than dramatic: new voices, better accents, and less of the "checking..." pause that interrupts spoken answers.
The update adds voices in French, German, Hindi, Mexican Spanish, Korean, and Japanese. OpenAI says it is rolling out to all users now, with API access coming soon.
Why small voice changes matter
Voice is often the easiest way to use an assistant while doing something else—cooking, commuting, or working with your hands. Two things tend to decide whether it feels usable: whether it understands your language and accent, and whether it keeps a natural rhythm instead of stalling mid-sentence. This update targets both.
The caveat is unchanged: a smoother voice is not a more accurate one. Confirm anything important—dosages, addresses, numbers—through text or the original source rather than trusting your memory of what you heard.
