Cursor is a code editor with an AI agent at its center. It looks and feels like a familiar editor, so you can keep your keyboard shortcuts and extensions, but almost every action has an AI shortcut next to it. The tool asks you to describe an outcome — "make this page load the user's saved items" — and then works out which files to change, writes the code, and shows you a diff. It suits people who are comfortable in a codebase and want to move faster, and it is approachable if you only code occasionally, because you can always ask it to explain what it did.
From small edits to whole features
There are three levels of help. For a targeted change, you highlight code and describe the edit in place, which keeps you in control of a single file. For a bigger task, the agent mode plans steps, reads the relevant files, and edits several of them; you watch the progress and accept or reject changes as they come. Cursor can also run agents in the background that build, test, and even demonstrate a feature while you do something else, which is useful for tasks you'd rather not babysit.
A sane way to work with an agent
Give it context: point at the files or docs that matter, and state what "done" looks like. Let it draft, then read the diff — agents are good at plausible code that is subtly wrong. Run your tests before merging, and commit often so you can back out cleanly. When a task is vague, ask Cursor to outline a plan first; correcting a plan is cheaper than correcting finished code.
Limits and cost
The agent's reach is also its risk: it can touch more of your project than you expected, so keep changes reviewable. AI usage is metered, and running out mid-task is frustrating, so it helps to know your plan's allowance. Pricing and included usage shift frequently — check Cursor's pricing page rather than trusting older figures.
