Most image models mangle words, turning a poster headline into confident nonsense. Ideogram was built to fix that, and it mostly does: describe a sign, a book cover, or a logo mark and the lettering usually comes out readable. That one strength makes it the tool to reach for when the type is the point.
Worth trying first for anything with words
If you need a fake cereal box, a coffee-shop chalkboard, or a T-shirt slogan, start here rather than with a general image model. Keep phrases short and put the exact text in quotes inside the prompt. You can pick from styles like design, realistic, or 3D, and recent versions improved how text sits inside a composition instead of floating on top. For a quick pitch deck or a social post, the result is often good enough to present. A useful habit is to generate the background and the lettered element in separate prompts, then combine them in an editor; the model is more reliable when it is not doing both at once. If the first attempt slips on spelling, reroll rather than trying to patch a single letter, since fixing type inside a generated image rarely works.
Where it stops
Ideogram is not a layout tool. Once you have the background or the lettered hero image, move it into something you can actually edit — Canva, Illustrator, Figma — to place body copy, align a grid, and export the sizes you need. Very long strings, unusual scripts, and dense typography still break. Chinese and other non-Latin text can work but is less dependable than English, so proofread every character.
A note on rights and plans
The free tier is limited, so heavy use means a paid plan; the newest model has also been published as open weights, which matters if you want to run it yourself. As with any generated image, a likeness, a logo, or a brand style can be off-limits, and a real product photo should not be replaced by an invented one.
Comparing options? Midjourney leans more artistic, Adobe Firefly leans safer for commercial use, and Canva AI keeps the whole design editable. See our prompt guide for wording tips.
